Evangelical Lutheran Church marks 60th anniversary

The 60th anniversary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Ghana (ELCG) was Monday celebrated in Accra on the theme, ‘Arise and let us build’.

The anniversary was celebrated in partnership with the Lutheran Media Ministry (LMM), a Christian non-governmental organisation (NGO) and was characterised by annual Easter fun games.

Four major congregations under the ELCG, namely the All Saints Lutheran Church, the Trinity Lutheran Church, the St Peter’s Lutheran Church and the St Paul’s Lutheran Church, participated in the fun games.

They competed in Ludu, draught, 100-meter races, musical chairs, cards, lime and spoon, eating competition and soccer among others.

The celebration was also used to educate members on the need for physical exercises as a requirement for good health.

The Board Chair of the LMM, Mr Ekow Coleman in a welcome address, thanked members for their participation in the celebration and prayed for enhanced cooperation between members of the LLM and the ELCG.

He said ‘the celebration was not only to garner the little profit that comes from bodily exercises but to celebrate God through sporting activities for his faithfulness to the ministry and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana.’

Media Manager of the Lutheran Media Ministry Mr Nicholas Sarkodee-Adoo in his speech said he was grateful to always partner with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana for the past three years to organise the sporting events to foster unity and reduce stress through exercising.

He noted that although the church and the ministry were growing they still faced challenges saying, “Fundraising has always been one major challenge facing the ministry, along with the need to develop a base of sponsors locally who will donate to support the ministry on a regular basis.”

Mr Sarkodee-Adoo therefore called on all congregations and individual Lutherans who had been supporting over the years to join the team of donors to continue to support the Lutheran Media Ministry in the quest to propagate the gospel of Jesus Christ across Ghana.

He urged for continuous cordial relationship between the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana and the Lutheran Media Ministry for the effective propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

A senior pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Rev Edward Sereko-Younge in an interview said the Lutheran Church has been in existence since 1952 and from then we continuously encourage and strengthen the confessional Lutheran theology and practice which centered on Jesus Christ.

“And events like this offer us the ideal time to enrich the unity between member congregations and aids in fostering peace and unity,” he added.
