Employment Minister charges job fair participants to help resolve unemployment situation

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Ignatius BaffourAwuah, has called on employers who have been participating in the annual Ghana Job Fairs to show commitment to help resolve the unemployment situation in the country.

According to him they should not toy with desperate job seekers under the pretext of interviewing and later leave them to their fate or disappointed.

“Let me urge especially job providers who are here not to just come and toy with our people, invite them for interview and let go disappointed.

“I want real action taking place. I would love to hear testimonies after this programme,” he stated.

MrBaffourAwuah was speaking at the launch of this year’s Ghana JobFair dubbed Green Edition in Sunyani – Bono Regional Capital yesterday.

The JobFair is organised by Ghanaian-German Centre for jobs, Migration and Reintegration, in partnership with Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.

It is a flagship held annually to offer opportunities for job seekers to acquire the necessary skills and mindset for innovative and sustainable approaches among others.

The Minister noted that the Ghana JobFair is anchored on government’s agenda for jobs; creating prosperity and equal opportunity for all – 2017 to 2024.

Stressing on the importance of the programme he noted it offers platform for job seekers to acquire the needed skills necessary for enhancing employability and creativity on the fast-transforming employment space.

Mr BaffourAwuah announced that out of over 10,000 participants who took part in the previous Ghana JobFair, 561 made up of 358 males and 203 females were qualified and placed with 1,455 declared vacancies.

Government through various policies and programmes he said was committed in ensuring that majority of the youth are in a gainful employment.

The Deputy Head of Development Cooperation at the German Embassy to Ghana, Ms Ramona Simon, in her remarks said Ghana is one of the key partners for Germany in Africa with regular bilateral exchanges.

She said the two countries are strong trading partners, with strong diplomatic ties in many initiatives adding that the Ghanaian-German Centre, which is complementing the Ghana Government’s efforts at creating opportunities for young people, is an important part of this cooperation.”We all know that sustainable jobs are crucial for creating economic development and decent life perspectives for the young generation. That is why I am particularly happy to be here today and to see that both young job seekers and employers are finding this great opportunity together.”

The Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu-Banahene, on her part commended the organisers especially GIZ, YEA, Ministry of Employment and other partners for organising to equip the youth in their quest to get meaningful employment. She urged the participants to take advantage of government interventions such as Technical and Vocational Training and MASLOC, to equip create employment for themselves and others.
