‘Election of MMDCEs will regulate activities of appointees’

Prophet Dr Prince Okyere, President of the Faith Anointing International Ministries, has observed that the election of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) will deepen democracy, probity, transparency and accountability in the local government.

He explained that when they are chosen by the locals, activities at the local level would be regulated and appointees would be answerable to the people, and considered as international best practice aimed at deepening local democracy through popular participation in governance.

“The practice has been adopted in many African countries including Kenya, Uganda and Namibia and has been allowing their citizenry to elect own mayors as well as local chairpersons, and has been long overdue in our country that locals should be given the opportunity to elect their own leaders.

“The election of the MMDCEs will also spur them on to work very hard since anything short of growth and development will let them lose their jobs in four years time,”  Prophet Dr Okyere commended the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for the initiative and urged the citizenry to participate in the referendum scheduled for December 17, 2019.

“I also appeal to the government to make public the Ayawaso West Wuogon election violence report and punish the culprits to serve as a deterrent and I call on the government to provide adequate security for the upcoming elections to enable more people to exercise their franchise,” he intimated. –GNA
