The Volta Region office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has seized 1,000 illegal meters from households from 2021 to the first half of 2022.
The Volta Regional Manager of the ECG, Mr Emmanuel Lumor, made this known at a stakeholder’s engagement in Ho yesterday aimed at providing the opportunity to establish good relationship with MDCEs.
It was also meant to sensitise them on the operations of the ECG, address their challenges and gather feedback from them to improve on service delivery.
He, therefore, called on the Municipal and District Chief Executives to collaborate with the company to weed out perpetrators of these illegalities from their districts.
The engagement was organised by the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) in collaboration with Electricity Company of Ghana, Volta.
Mr Lumor, who took the MDCEs through their operations, pointed out that assembly members had no mandate whatsoever to install electricity meters and warned that the ECG would readily prosecute them for such conducts irrespective of their positions.
He noted that it was their wish to make the region the hub of excellent customer service.
According to him, the company had upgraded some single phase networks to three phases and had put up a switching station at most districts to ensure stable power supply to households and industries.
Mr Lumor further said as part of aggressive operations to pursue its debtors, the ECG disconnected power supply of those who owed them, including high profile state institutions.
He stated also that they had introduced a new billing system to address the issue of accumulation of bills that could result to loss in revenue for the company.
He said under a Self Help Electrification Project (SHEP), districts that needed it should apply to the Ministry of Energy for assistance, while notifying his outfit.
The ECG regional manager advised the MDCEs and the public to channel grievances to their offices for quick resolution.
The Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa, in his opening remarks, charged the MDCEs to work within the ambits of the law of ECG to ensure that they develop, regulate and ensure utilisation of the country’s energy resources in a sustainable manner.
He said it was necessary to build strong institutions if the country wanted to develop, as a result MDCEs must support ECG to work at their various districts towards achieving that.
