EC to exhibit voter register Sept 15-25

The Electoral Commission (EC), will between September 18 and September 25, 2020, conduct an exhibition of the newly compiled voters register for the December 7 general elections, a Deputy Director at the Commission in charge of Electoral Services, Dr Serebour Quaicoe has said.

According to Dr Quaicoe, the Commission, as part of the exercise had introduced a short code (1422) for all mobile networks, to enable registered voters to verify their details on the electoral roll.

He, however, explained that the messaging system was only for verification, saying, “The coding will not allow you to effect any change, so if you do the coding and you realise that there’s any mistake, go to the centre and effect the change.”

Speaking at the third delegates conference of the National Democratic Party in Accra, on Saturday,  he said electorates could follow up to their respective exhibition centres for any corrections about their details to be effected, or do so at any district Electoral Commission office.

Meanwhile, the EC, through an advert on its Facebook page has encouraged voters to continue to observe all the safety protocols of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), including social distancing, wearing of face mask, washing and sanitising of hands frequently, during the exhibition.

The exercise, which would be conducted at various polling stations in all 16 regions across the country, would enable electorates to verify their details with the Commission, as captured during the registration process.

The exhibition would also allow voters to request for amendment, replacement of poor quality or damaged voter identification cards and make insertions of names where necessary.

In addition, qualified persons would be given the opportunity to raise objection to names of unqualified persons, including the deceased persons, minors and non-citizens on the provisional voters register at the centres.

The exercise would be conducted in accordance with Regulation 23(1) of Constitutional Instrument (CI 91), which provides that, the Commission shall, not later than three months from the end of the registration period, compile and display the provisional voters’ register in the country.

It adds that, the Commission would state the name, age, sex, residential address and show the photograph of each person whose application for registration was accepted at a registration centre for verification.

The EC, between June 30 and August 6, this year, compiled a new voters register, and continued with a two-day mop-up which ended on August 9, to give opportunity to eligible Ghanaians who were unable to register in the main exercise to do so.

The exercise saw the Commission record a provisional registered number of 16,963,306 voters onto its new register for the 2020 elections, out of which 32,762 applicants had been challenged for various reasons, mainly bordering on nationality.
