Drivers, passengers cautioned against non-compliance with COVID-19 protocol

The Tema Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), has warned that it would arrest and prosecute  drivers or passengers, who would fail to comply with the safety protocol outlined to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Tema Regional MTTD Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Joseph Owusu-Bempah, has said security personnel would arrest people who would violate the protocol.

According to him, it had come to the notice of the MTTD that most drivers of company buses in the Tema area “were flouting the protocol with careless abundance as some of the drivers and staff onboard their vehicles sit very close to each other without nose mask”.

He said “some company buses still carry passengers full to capacity without adhering to the protocols anymore. There seems to be no supervisors to also ensure the staff on the bus are wearing the nose mask as well”.

ACP Owusu-Bempah in an interview with the Ghanaian Times, warned that “all such companies should know that they are breaking the law and would have to face the consequences of their actions”.

He observed that many commercial vehicle drivers were adhering to the directive even though some of them and their conductors only wore their face masks when they were approaching the police.

ACP Owusu-Bempah expressed his disappointment at the development, and advised the public to be vigilant and report such drivers and their conductors to the police for the necessary action.
