Driver’s mate gets 10 years for robbery

The Ashaiman Circuit Court has sentenced Enoch Ofori, a driver’s mate, to 10 years’ imprisonment in hard labour for robbery.

The court presided over by Mr Simon Gaga convicted him after he had pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Samuel Aperweh, said the complainant, Gloria Asantewaa Kwabi, 35, is a trader, who lives at Spintex, Accra, while Ofori is a driver’s mate and lives in Washington, a suburb of Ashaiman.

According to the prosecution, on December 28, 2022, at about 3:30 pm, the husband of complainant, Daniel Kasereko, went to Ashaiman market to take her (complainant) on his motorcycle home.

Chief Insp. Aperweh said on reaching Janelex School, at Gbetsile, they (complainant and husband) saw accused also riding an unregistered motorcycle with accomplice as a pillion rider, speeding towards the complainant and the husband.

The prosecution told the court that when they (accused and accomplice) got to the complainant and the husband, the accomplice pushed Kwabi and she fell from the motorcycle.

Chief Insp. Aperweh said in the process, the accomplice overpowered the complainant and snatched her Infinix Hot 10i mobile phone valued at GH¢870.00 and GH¢601.00 cash and they (attackers) sped off.

The prosecution said the husband of the complaint chased accused and his accomplice and they (accused and accomplice) abandoned the motorcycle and took to their heels.

Chief Insp. Aperweh said with the help of other people, accused was arrested and handed over to the police at Zenu Atadeka.

The prosecution said the accomplice escaped with the phone and money, but the motorcycle has been impounded at the Police Station.

Chief Insp. Aperweh said accused admitted the offence in his cautioned statement and said Amankwa was an accomplice.

The prosecution said the police had intensified efforts to arrest the accomplice. -GNA
