Driver jailed 3 years for killing woman, 60

The Takoradi Circuit Court, on Tuesday,   sentenced a driver, Emmanuel Adu, 26, to three years’ imprisonment in hard labour, for killing a 60-year-old woman, in April, last year.

Adu, who was charged with the offence of dangerous driving and negligently causing harm, resulting in the death of Cecilia Asabil, pleaded guilty.

The court, presided by Mrs Abena Adjei Duke, heard that at about 7pm on April 22, 2018, Adu drove a Sprinter bus from Takoradi to Accra.

The prosecution said that, when Adu reached a curve at Assokor-Assaman, he overtook five vehicles in a row, and crashed into an oncoming Hyundai H100 with registration number WR 2315-15, being driven by Derrick Wilbeck.

The crash caused the death of Cecelia Asabil, who was on board the vehicle, and injury of 14 passengers.

Adu has started his sentence at the Sekondi Central Prisons.
