Driver gets 3 years for stealing passenger’s bag

The circuit court at Adentan, in Accra, has sentenced an Uber driver, to three years imprisonment, for stealing a passenger’s bag containing local and foreign currencies and other personal effects.

Emmanuel Safo, 23, stolen his client’s bag containing iPhone 11 cell phone, 5,000 Euros, $5,000, a cheque for GHc7,000, bunch of keys, a plane ticket to Netherlands, three foreign and local ATM Bank Cards among others, on January 31, this year.

 Charged with stealing, Safo pleaded guilty, and the court presided over by Mrs Sedinam Awo Balokah convicted accused on his plea and sentenced Safo.

Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo told the court that the complainant, Rudolf Teeper, was a businessman from Netherlands and lived in Takoradi.

Chief Insp Lanyo said convict was an Uber driver, residing at Teshie Camp.

The court heard that on January 31, this year, at about 6:10 pm, complainant engaged the services of accused to drive him to the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to depart to the Netherlands.

 Prosecution said upon their arrival at the KIA, Safo tried to assist complainant to offload his luggage at the Check point.

In the process, Chief Insp Lanyo said Safo stole the complainant’s bag, containing the s items cash and sped off in the car.

Prosecution said when the complainant was going through departure formalities, she realized her bag had been stolen, and she rushed to the car park, but accused had left the place.

 Chief Insp Lanyo said on April 11, this year, a report was made to the police and when accused was arrested, he admitted stealing the bag and its contents.

 Prosecution said Safo told the police that after taking monies from the bag, he left it at a spot between Action Chapel and Accra Shopping Mall. -GNA
