‘Doctors in U/East Region to get Indian scholarships’

The India High Commissioner in Accra, Mr Sugandh Rajaram, has said that doctors in the Upper East Region would benefit from Indian scholarships, to upgrade their skills and knowledge to help improve health delivery in the region.

He said capacity building in health and education was at the core of India’s cooperation with Ghana.

Mr Rajaram gave the assurance when he called on the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Stephen Yakubu,  on Wednesday,  as part of a one-week visit to the region, to familiarise himself with the business environment.

He said that the India-Ghana bilateral relationship will benefit the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga and the Bolgatanga Technical University.

Mr Rajaram stated that the India government was committed to capacity building of their partners including Ghana, and explained that that was why the India government provided 150 scholarships every year to Ghanaian students and workers to study in India.

“Because of COVID-19, this year, all such courses are either online or suspended. But, once we come out of this situation, we will resume our scholarships, and I will work with you (Minister) to ensure that people benefit from professional courses in various areas,” he said.

Mr Rajaram said he had met with six alumni who benefited from India scholarships, and he would reconnect them to India in due course and make them brand ambassadors of India in the region.

The Regional Minister expressed gratitude to the Indian envoy and praised the long-standing relationship between the two countries dating back to the pre-colonial era.

Mr Yakubu said the two countries had over the years cooperated effectively, and learnt good practices from each other to enhance the living standards of the citizenry in both countries.

He called for support to revamp the defunct Pwalugu Tomatoes and Zuarungu Meat factories, to create more jobs and business opportunities for the people.

Mr Yakubu said the Fumbisi Rice Valley in the Builsa South District had the potential to supply rice to the entire country and beyond, and invited the India business community to take advantage of business opportunities and invest in the region.
