The Denkyembour District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has admonished the citizenrythatit has a responsibility to be security conscious, so as to detect and prevent activities of violent extremists and terrorists.
It said it was the responsibility of citizens to promote peace, unity, cohesion and resolve conflicts at all times for national progress, growth and development.
The Commission noted that in collaboration with the Ministry of National Security it has rolled out national projects for political party activists and members of the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) to ensure Ghanaians understood the essence of peaceful coexistence, cohesion and participation inclusiveness.
Ernest Eli Kwami, Denkyembour District Directorof NCCE, made the admonition at a forum in Denkyembour in the Eastern Region, on the theme: ‘Preventing electoral violence and providing security to the northern border regions of Ghana’, under the auspices of the European Union.
He explained that the mandate of the IPDC, which was constituted by the Commission was to promote peace, unity, harmony and resolve conflicts among political actors and other relevant stakeholders across metropolitan, municipal and districts in the country.
“It is important for political parties to re-enforce their role as key stakeholders in ensuring political parties sensitise and educate their communities to uphold peaceful co-existence, cohesion, unity and harmony.
“Ghana is not ready for any extremist activities, to curb electoral violence and protect public peace and safety, citizens must adhere to the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491) the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999) and the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), so as to deepen the country’s democratic credentials,” Mr Kwami warned.
Alex Sackey, the Eastern Regional Directorof NCCE, observed that the National Security Strategy had come at the right time to sensitise and educate the public and create the needed awareness against violence and activities, which could be linked to extremists and terrorists’ activities.
He called on the government to promulgate policies, programmes and social interventions which would create direct employment to the unemployed youth so as to create wealth in society. -GNA
