Danger looms… traders, mechanics besiege high tension towers

Danger is looming in the Tema West and Ashaiman municipalities as mechanic shops, drinking bars, vulcaniser shops, refuse dumps and traders besiege several Ghana Grid Company (GRIDco)’s  transmission high tension electricity towers (pylons) in the area.

This group of people engage in various activities and spend most of their days there using naked flames for welding, cooking or burning refuse in the area.

The situation, the Ghanaian Times has observed has been going on for months and years now.

Despite markings with red by GRIDCo cautioning such persons to move away, they remain adamant and continue to do brisk business under the pylons.

The Assembly Member for the Adjei Kojo Electoral Area, Mr Romeo Akahoho, told the Ghanaian Times, that letters had been written to GRIDCo to intervene but nothing significant has been done.

He expressed the view that if nothing was done, a disaster might strike soon.

The chairman for the Clayland Residents Association, Mr Israel Adadevoh said the attention of the Ashaiman and Tema West Municipal Assemblies and GRIDCo had been drawn to the possible dangers associated but no response was forthcoming.

He, therefore, appealed to the government to intervene before things get out of hand.

Mr Adadevoh said the encroachers were practising open defecation under the high tension towers which must also be stopped.
