C’ttee to track execution of projects by Sunyani Municipal Assembly inaugurated

The Sunyani Municipal Assembly on Wednesday inaugurated a committee to track expenditure and monitor execution of physical infrastructural projects against shoddy works to facilitate appropriate and judicious utilisation of the Assembly’s funds to help move the development of the municipality to the next level.

It is also to deepen its relationship and provide platforms to enable the citizenry to contribute to decision-making processes and strengthen the decentralisation concept.

The five-member committee comprises representatives from civil society organisations (CSOs), the Municipal Assembly, the citizenry, religious groups and the media.

Titled, ‘Enhancing citizenry participation and social accountability at the district level’, selected CSOs in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development are implementing the nine-month project being funded by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ).

The project among other interventions seeks to empower the citizenry to effectively and efficiently monitor implementation of the Assembly’s Action Plan to improve their continuous participation in the plan processes which include selection of projects, implementation and evaluation.

The formation of the committee is in line with a project that seeks to enhance the citizenry’s knowledge in social auditing and deepen their relationship with the assemblies under the auspices of MIHOSO International, a non-governmental health-centered and social accountability, probity and transparency actor, is facilitating the implementation of the project in the Sunyani municipality.

In her inaugural address, Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, charged the committee to also support and assist the Assembly to look for investors to help develop the municipality through the Assembly’s required collaborative and active support and assistance from the private sector to develop.

Thomas Benarku, the Director of Programmes of MIHOSO International, emphasised the committee was not set up to witch-hunt the assembly but instead to collaborate with it effectively and efficiently to help block leakages in the assembly’s expenditure and revenue outflows to promote quality infrastructural development. -gna.org
