CSIR appoint new Deputy-Director General

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Re search (CSIR) has appointed Professor Mrs Marian Dorcas Quain as the Deputy Director-General (DDG).

Her appointment took effect on January 1, 2023.

She takes over from Prof. Paul Pinnock Bosu who was appointed as the substantive Director-General (D-G) of CSIR in May, 2022.

Before her appointment, Prof Quain was a Chief Research Scientist with the CSIR-Crops Research Institute and an associate professor of the CSIR College of Science and Technology (CCST).

For the next 5-years of her appointment, she would oversee the development and execution of Research and Development activities of all the 13 research Institutes of the Council, mobilise funds for Researcg and Development activities, establish effective linkages with relevant institutions and agencies within and outside CSIR.

Subsequently, she would oversee the transfer of the results of research in science and technology and co-ordinate the commercialisation activities of corporate CSIR as well as ensure quality assurance and undertake monitoring and evaluation of the research outputs of the Institutes to ensure that research results are reliable, relevant and customer-driven.

In an interview with the Ghanaian Times yesterday, Dr Quain said she was more than prepared to work with the various leadership of the Council to facilitate its growth.

For her, with her wealth of knowledge on the job and currently managing the Sweet Potato Action for Security and Health in Africa (SASHA II) project as well as the Conservation of African Sweet Potato Landraces Genebank Platform projects, she was determined to continue from where previous successors left off.

She said she was ready to lead efforts in the upcoming Program for Seed System Innovation for Vegetatively-Propagated Crops in Africa (PROSSIVA) project which aims at enhancing the efficiency in the seed system.

“The project will address and overcome the seed system bottlnecks in the country,” she stated.

Prof (Mrs.) Marian Dorcas Quain is a renowned biotechnologist with expertise in tissue culture, genetic transformation, plant physiology, molecular biology, cryopreservation, and aeroponics.

She holds a PhD in Botany-Plant Physiology, an MPhil in Botany-Physiology as well as a BSc. in Botany-Zoology-all from the University of Ghana, Legon. She also holds a certificate in Administration and Management from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Accra.

Prof. Quain was recently honoured at the 2022 Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) Awards for her contributions to the prosperity of farming in Africa. The African Agricultural Technology Foundation |(AATF) celebrated her as a Biotechnology hero in 2022.
