Court fines 3 COVID-19 patients GH¢6,000 for attacking doctor

Three COVID-19 patients, who attacked and assaulted a medical doctor, at an isolation centre at M-Plaza Hotel, in Accra, have been fined a total of GH¢6,000 by a District Magistrate Court.

The patients, all foreigners, are also to pay GH¢2,000 to the doctor as compensation.

The convicts, Jubreal Abinbola, 23, a photographer, Ahmed Akinbiyi, 25, musician, ad Ramsey Amoefe, 24, designer, reportedly became angry,‘pulled’ a metal fork, chased and slapped the medical doctor, when they tested positive for COVID-19 at the centre.

The Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Juliana Obeng, disclosed these to the Ghanaian Times, in Accra, yesterday.

She said two weeks ago, a medical doctor assigned to the COVID -19 centre, in Accra, was attacked by the convicts, who were being quarantined at the facility.

DSP Obeng said a doctor (name withheld) while on medical routine checks on the patients at the centre detected the convicts were COVID-19 positive.

This according to the police PRO did not go down well with Abinbola, who burst out in anger and rained insults on the doctor, resulting in commotion and tension at the facility.

DSP Obeng said Akinbiyi charged on the doctor, pulled a metal fork from his pocket and chased him (doctor) in an attempt to stab him.

She said Omoefe grabbed the doctor and slapped him whiles fleeing from Akinbiyi, adding that the doctor escaped from the suspects and reported the matter to the police.

DSP Obeng stated that the suspects were arrested and charged with the offence of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace contrary to section 207 of the criminal offences Act of 1960 (Act 29).

She said the convicts have been deported to their country (name withheld).
