Couple accused of ‘baby theft’ granted Gh¢80,000 bail

The Adentan Circuit has granted GHc 40,000 bail each to a married couple, accused of stealing an abandoned baby boy, at New Legon.

The court, presided over by Mrs Sedinam Awo Balokah asked accused to produce two sureties each, who should be known to the police, and adjourned the case to Monday.

Edward Nyarko -Affum and Naomi Nyarko- Affum, who claimed they had developed special love for the baby, kept him until the police and officials of the Department of Social Welfare (DSW) arrested them.

Charged with conspiracy to commit crime and child stealing, the couple, who said they have four children, pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting, Chief inspector Maxwell Lanyo said the complainant was the Adentan Municipal Director of the Department of Social Welfare, who lived at Madina, and Edward and Naomi resided at New Legon, Accra.

The court heard that the couple and other person found the baby in front of an uncompleted building at New Legon, and took him to the Lakeside Estate Police Station.

Chief Insp Lanyo said the married couple and the other person were asked to take the baby to the Adentan Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit.

The court heard that after taking the baby to the Ashalley Botcwey Health Centre for medical attention, they took the boy home, instead of taking him to the police as directed.

Chief Insp Lanyo told the court that the Greater Accra Regional Director of Social Welfare received information that an abandoned baby had been taken to the health Centre.

It said the director gave the telephone number of Edward to the complainant, so that complainant could contact Edward and rescue the baby.

The prosecution said when the complainant called Edward on his phone, he (Edward) answered the call.

Chief Insp Lanyo explained that the complainant called Edward on phone and introduced herself as head of Adenta Municipal Social Welfare Officer, who wanted to take custody of the baby.

The prosecution said Edward told the complainant that the battery of his phone was ‘draining fast’ and promised to contact her on phone latter.

Chief Insp Lanyo said Edward did not get back to the complainant as promised, and when the complainant and her team went to the health centre, they did not met the baby nor accused. —GNA
