Councils to handle Dombo, Limann Tech Vars conversions in offing

Plans are underway to constitute interim councils to handle the affairs of the SD Dombo University for Business and Integrated Studies (SD UBIDS) as well as oversee the conversion of the Hilla Limann Polytechnic into a technical university.

The move is expected to better position the two institutions to admit more students this year as the first batch of students under the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy would be churned out this year.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih announced this at Ghana’s 63rd Independence Day parade at Wa on Friday.

“Considering their numbers, government must put measures in place to ensure that there are enough institutions to admit most of the students irrespective of their geographic location and status in society,” he stated.

The parade consisted of pupils from basic schools as well as students from junior and senior high schools across the region, personnel of the various security agencies and members of the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on November 10, 2018 at the 19th congregation of the University for Development Studies, (UDS) at Tamale announced that the government had given approval for the conversion of the satellite campuses of Wa and Navrongo of the UDS into autonomous universities.

He further intimated that at a meeting with the Waala Traditional Council on February 7, 2020 he had assented to the bill to make the Wa Campus autonomous with the name SD UBIDS.

Dr Salih said expediting action on work needed to be done in the two institutions was a form on consolidating the gains of the region such that efforts made to push students through the Free SHS would be rewarded when the beneficiaries gained admission into tertiary institutions.

He intimated that the government was also embarking on infrastructural projects in all the public SHSs in the region to open them up for adequate admission of students from the junior high schools.

The minister used the opportunity to call on residents to participate in the 2020 population and housing census in June.

For his part the Minister of the South West Region in Burkina Faso, Colonel Nitiemah Tagsseba who joined in the celebration assured participants that his region was working closely with the Upper West Regional Co-ordinating Council to ensure that they were able to counter cross- border crimes and also prevent terrorist attacks.

“Although we are diversified in our ways of lives, we are working tediously to ensure that the diversity would lead to the promotion of peaceful co-existence,” he added.

Deserving schools that distinguished themselves at the march past were given awards with the Wa Methodist School for the Blind placing first in the special schools category.
