Convict escapes from courtroom

Drama unfolded at the Sunyani High Court last Wednesday, when a 29-year-old excavator driver, with handcuffs on his hands, escaped, after he was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.

The police detective, who brought Shaibu Mohammed, to court, with the help of others chased convict and re-arrested him at den-Akokra Kwadwo, in Sunyani, and brought him back to the courtroom.

The convict took to his heels when documents pertaining to his jail term were being processed.

Mohammed fled through the main gate of the court, crossed the main Sunyani-Kumasi busy highway into the bush at Akokora Kwadwo, while being pursued by the police detective and some residents.

This attracted a lot of people, including court workers, who came out to catch a glimpse of what was unfolding.

The convict was later whisked away to serve his prison sentence, but the Ghanaian Times gathered that he would be brought back to face the court for attempting to escape from lawful custody.

Mohammed was charged with stealing mobile phones from the Sunyani Hospital, and the court presided over by judge Devine Koku Ahiadu convicted him on his own plea.
