Community leaders urged to support nat’l COVID-19 vaccination

The Upper West Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Services(GHS) has appealed to assembly members and other leaders to encourage people in their communities to participate in the national COVID-19 vaccination exercise, scheduled for this week.

A statement signed by the Deputy Director of Public Health at the Directorate, Dr Richard Wodah-Seme, copied the Ghanaian Timesexpressed concern about the low turnout for the vaccination in some areas in the region.

It said because the leaders wield much influence, they could be in the best position to educate the people on the national COVID-19 vaccination exercise.

The statement indicated that the directorate was doing its best to increase awareness and also bring vaccination to the doorsteps of the people.

Iturged traditional authorities to serve as COVID-19 vaccination ambassadors by encouraging residents to go for the vaccines.

“We need the support of the traditional authorities, opinion leaders, religious leaders, media and all those who matter to join our drive to reach the vaccination target in the Upper West Region,”the statement stressed.

It said“COVID-19 vaccination teams will be available at all hospitals, health centres, and vaccination posts in your neighborhood from February 2 to 6 to vaccinate all eligible persons aged 15 years and above including pregnant women,” it said.

The statement encouraged breastfeeding mothers to also visit the vaccination centres and receive their jabs.

It urged the public to adhere to the COVID-19safety protocol of wearing nose mask and frequently washing hands under running water, among others.
