Collapsed building kills boy, injures2 siblings at Akpadibu

A four-year old boy, Michael Ganyo, died and two other siblings were injured, when the building they were occupying collapsed on them, at Akpadibu, in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality.

The tragedy followed a strong storm that accompanied the late afternoon rains here, last Sunday.

One of the injured, an eight-year-old girl, who had to shield her three-month old sister,was injured on the forehead by a falling block.

The Nsawam District Police Commander, Superintendent  of Police Marian Adu-Owusu, confirmed the story, saying investigation into the case was ongoing.

An eye-witness, Mohammed Alhassan,a foreman, told the Ghanaian Times, said the incident occurred between 3pm and 4pm following a downpour, whichlasted about forty-five minutes.

MrAlhassan,who was putting up a building close to where  the incident happened, explained that the wind, which accompanied the rains, “carried away the roofing of the building in which the boy and his siblings were living.”

He said the eight-year sibling of the boy took her other sister to safety before the building collapsed, but she was injured in the process.

When the Ghanaian Times visited the scene around 5pm, scores of residents, friends and well wishes had gathered at the scene to catch a glimpse of the incident and to commiserate with the affected family.

Some members of the affected family, including the mother of the boy, Mercy Ganyo, a nursing mother, wailed uncontrollably.

The Assembly Member ofthe AnkwaDoboro Electoral Area in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality, MosesAchigiba,elders of the community and church members of Madam Ganyo, were also there to commiserate with the affected family.

MrAchigibasaid the case had been reported to the Nsawam Police, and Stephany Martey, a member of the affected family, told the Ghanaian Times, that her sister had gone out to buy some items when the incident happened.

Meanwhile, the injured had been treated and discharged from hospital when the Ghanaian Times got to the scene around 5pm.

In a related development, some buildings were damaged and their roofs ripped off at Gakorpe and Ahiabu, in the municipality.

The roofing of Church of Pentecost at Ahiabu was not was destroyed, andat Gakopre, the Restoration Christian Church was damaged.

Christian Ahiabu,resident of Ahiabu, said “the roofing of my building has been taken away by the windstorm and I have to perch with family members before I fix my roof.”
