Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency and National Disaster Management Organisation ( NADMO) Coordinator, George Isaac Amoo has called on MPs and leaders of communities to spearhead and participate in communal labour in order to develop their communities.
According to him, “if all leaders of the communities lead by example by demonstrating responsibilities in their society, it will go a long way to inspire the communal spirit of the citizenry.
“Ghana is capable, we have the people but the citizenry want to see leadership that gives inspiration, when a leader says it, he or she will demonstrate, contribute and provide honest leadership,” Mr Amoo stressed.
He made the call at the second edition of the annual Ngleshie Amanfro clean-up exercise.
The five-hour exercise organised by the Global Information Centre was participated by members of the Ngleshie Amanfro community, churches and opinion leaders, the MP for Bortianor, Alhaji Habib Saad and the chief of Ngleshie Amanfro, Nii Kwashie Gbolor III.
Mr Amoo noted that, it was imperative for the country to deem poor sanitation as a disaster and urged the need for the citizenry to revive their communal spirit in order to transform communities and the nation as a whole.
“There is the need for NADMO to sensitise the citizenry in all communities about water and sanitation activities in order for them to realise the relevance of developing their communities.
Nii Gbolor expressed gratitude for the mass participation of residents in communal activities and appealed to them to sustain the spirit to accelerate development of the area.
He condemned open defecation within the communities as a canker to sanitation because their water bodies were being destroyed, and asked members of the community to come out in their numbers every three months to participate in communal spirited activities to keep their surroundings clean.
He expressed the need for the community to stand out among others in order for all communities to emulate them and attract investment for the youth.
Alhaji Saad, cited Rwanda as a beneficiary of good waste management practices and called for more collaborative efforts between the people in developing their community through proper waste management.
He advised his fellow MPs to exercise humility in their constituencies in order to relate well with their constituents to improve livelihoods.
