Cleaner jailed 12 months for stealing computers

A cleaner, Michael Kwei Nunoo, has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court, for stealing computer sets, belonging to Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Nunoo, who was accused of stealing the computer sets, valued GH₵70, 000, pleaded guilty and the court presided over by Mr K.K.Obiri Yeboah, convicted him on his own plea.

According to the court, in passing sentence, it took into consideration the fact that accused was a “family man”.

It also took note that when accused was granted bail by the police, he voluntarily appeared before court, and the computers were also retrieved.

The court, however, noted that the offense preferred against the accused was a felony, and sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment in hard labour.

Chief Inspector Dennis Terkpertey, said the complainant was Mr Paul O. Annan, the Greater Accra Sector Command of the Customs Division of the GRA.

The court heard that the convict, was a casual worker, stationed at James Town, Accra Sector, GRA, and resident of Chorkor.

Chief Insp Terkpertey said on August 19, this year, GRA officials detected that five brand new Dell Optiplex computers valued at GH₵70,000, allocated to the James-Town Collection Point, had been stolen.

Prosecution said the matter was reported to the police and investigations led to the arrest of Nunoo.

Chief Insp Terkpertey said during interrogation, Nunoo said he had sold the five computers to Abeka, at a shop in Chorkor, for GH₵1,000.

The prosecution said when the convict led the police to the said Abeka, his shop had been closed and he could not be traced.

Chief Insp Terkperty said the family members of accused “produced” the five computers, and efforts were being made to arrest Abeka for dishonestly receiving. – GNA
