Citizenry urged to quiz leaders on devt decisions

Adam Saddique, Obuasi East Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Ashanti Region, has cautioned that government officials will continue to provide projects and social infrastructure that may not be on their priority list, if the citizenry do not question the decisions by their leaders.

“There are instances where residents in a particular community tend to defecate in a newly constructed classroom block, this is because they urgently need a proper place of convenience instead of classroom blocks,” he bemoaned.

Mr Saddique, who cautioned at a public forum held in Odumase in the Obuasi East District, as part of its mandate to educate the citizenry on civic issues stressed that “certain unpleasant issues will not arise if community members dialogue with local government officials to discuss their major challenges.

“When the people decide to apportion blame on government officials and hesitate to ask questions or confront them with their most pressing needs, they will be provided with projects which may not be needed in their communities,” and urged the citizenry to engage their Assemblies through peaceful dialogues and put before them some major challenges encountered in their various communities.

“Community members and other stakeholders are encouraged to collectively find basic solutions in tackling some of your local challenges since such efforts can attract external support and assistance from local government officials,” Mr Saddique noted.

Ankapong Fofie, the Assembly member of the area, encouraged community members to change their attitude towards communal labour and reiterated the need for them to adhere to good sanitary practices and protect the environment against diseases associated with filthy environment.

Mr Fofie, however, promised the people of urgent intervention to fix damaged projects,

provide electricity poles, water and sanitation facilities in new settlements, sewerage and drainage systems and delve into AngloGold Ashanti recruitment opportunities.

Nana Kwamoah Bosompem, Benkumhene of Odumase, pleaded with community members to support the leadership in addressing some of the challenges facing the community.

Dr Patrick Boakye-Yiadom and Faustina Amissah, the Member of Parliament for Obuasi East and District Chief Executive respectively of the area, cut the sod for the construction of a clinic and kindergarten in the Odumase community.
