The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has reminded the citizenry of their responsibility to speak against breach of the 1992 Constitution.
“Ghanaians should be committed, determined and dedicated to protecting the legal document for accelerated political and socioeconomic progress, growth and development,” it said.
The Commission commended citizens for their commitment to uphold and protect the rule of law, constitutionalism, and democracy, especially under the Fourth Republican Constitution.
Paul Tetteh, the Assin-Fosu Municipal Director of NCCE, on the essence of the Constitution Day on January 7, first observed in 2019, was designated as a public holiday to mark the coming into effect of the country’s 1992 Constitution and the birth of the Fourth Republic, noted it sought to remind the citizenry of their civic and collective commitment, determination and dedication to a system of uninterrupted constitutional order.
“Upholding the fundamental laws of the country, as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution, is relevant to realising her progress, growth and development aspirations, to achieve this, there is the need for increased support and assistance for the commission to step-up public education, awareness and sensitisation on the significance of the day, especially for the younger generation, to appreciate its relevance.
“Public awareness, education and sensitisation was low as many Ghanaians are not aware of the day’s significance and the need for stakeholders to collaborate with the Commission and other identifiable groups on their civic responsibilities to help put the articles in the 1992 Constitution in their proper perspectives, thereby empowering them to defend it to the letter,” Mr Tetteh stressed.
He indicated that it could also help cure the apathy towards the celebration of the day and pledged the Commission’s commitment, determination and dedication to engage with citizens and update them on their constitutional rights to contribute meaningfully to national cohesion and development. -GNA
