Citizenry admonished to protect democratic gains

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has entreated the citizenry to, as a matter of urgency, do all they can to protect the gains made with regards to the democratic governance of the country.

It applauded them for their active involvement in safeguarding democracy, active participation and interest in the democratic journey for the past 30 years.

“Let us at all times protect the democratic gains we fought for which has been sustained for the past 30 years and not be complacent but applaud our contributions in various endeavours to chat democratic path by getting involved in local governance and the District level elections,” the Commission noted.

Emmanuel Mettle, the Municipal Director of NCCE at the La Dade-Kotopon Municipality, who made the admonition, asked Ghanaians to applaud themselves for the gains made in safeguarding constitutional rule for the past 30 years.

“We must applaud ourselves for our active participation and interest in the democratic journey over the past 30 years and we must not be complacent but jealously safeguard it since other countries on the continent have appreciate the gains made,” he stressed.

Speaking at a sensitisation event organised by NCCE for the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly to commemorate this year’s Constitution Week, Mr Mettle drew the attention of citizens and reiterated the Commission’s contribution to the progress, growth and development of democratic culture of the country.

The week-long celebration is aimed at amplifying the Commission’s contribution to the development of democratic culture in the country and to also entreat the citizenry to take part in the upcoming District Level Elections to boost voter turnout.

The theme for the 2023 celebration is ‘Thirty Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy-Building National Cohesion through Civic Education and Participation in Local Governance.’

The Constitution Week, which was instituted in 2001 to commemorate the country’s constitutional rule, is one of the flagship programmes of NCCE.

Mr Mettle appealed to citizens, especially the marginalised and vulnerable groups, to take active part in the upcoming district level elections in order to strengthen governance at the local level and accelerate progress, growth and development.

He underscored 30 years of consolidating constitutional democracy was needed to ensure peace building, national cohesion, rule of law, nation building and participation in local governance to deepen the assembly concept.
