The Chemu Senior High School in the Tema Metropolis on Saturday held its 40th anniversary grand durbar and speech and prize giving day.
The occasion which was on the theme “40 years of excellence: celebrating the heights attained, strengthening the pillars for greater academic exploits”, was attended by representatives from various institutions, parents, sister schools, old and current students.
The Guest of Honour, a former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and also a former Member of Parliament for the Krowor Constituency , Elizabeth Afoley Quaye commended the leadership of the school for working hard to uphold the standard of discipline over the years and encouraged them to continue to do same.
She also advised the students to be focused and spend more time with their books instead of focusing on social media which she said was time consuming and had even succeeded in leading some youths astray.
She urged them to avail themselves for wise counsel at all times and submit to authorities of the school so that they could undergo a transformation that would contribute to making them the best wherever they went.
A Lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Academy of Leadership and Executive Training, Prof. Charles Teye Amoatey who was the Guest Speaker said for five years, his family had decided to sponsor the best performing student to any public university as a regular student, as their contribution towards society.
Prof. Amoatey said whether in school or out of it, it was important for students to study with purpose and even read beyond their course materials to develop themselves holistically so that wherever they found themselves they would be ahead of their peers because they are more likely to have multiple skills.
The Headmistress for the Chemu Senior High School, Mrs Vicentia Kyere Anin-Agyei, said all the classrooms and the school’s aging infrastructure needed renovation as early as possible.
She said accommodation was also a major challenge for staff as currently out of a 100 teachers, only nine of them were being accommodated which was not good enough.
She also stated that there was no bus to transport the students to various places for academic related works and therefore appealed to stakeholders and old students to come to their aid.
Some students and teachers who had distinguished themselves were awarded for their hard work in various ways.
The event was attended by the Member of Parliament for the Tema Central Constituency Yves Hanson-Nortey and the Municipal Chief Executive for Tema, Yohanes Nii Armah.
