The Central-Western (Cenwest) zone secured the double after winning both men’s and women’s cross-country championships at the on-going Colleges of Education Sports Association (COESA) Games at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.
The cross-country championships took place almost simultaneously on the KNUST campus in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The five-competing zones at the 11th COESA Games are the Ashanti-Brong Ahafo (ASHBA), Eastern-Greater Accra (EGA), Central-Western (CENWEST), Volta and Northern zones.
The five teams presented four athletes each in the exciting event which sees teams ranked according to the final positions of their athletes.
The CENWEST team won the men’s championships with a score of 34 points, followed by EGA in second place with 40 points while the Northern Zone settled for third with 41 points.
In the women’s cross-country, the CENWEST topped the winners’ table with a score of 27, followed by the Northern zone with 38 and Volta in third with 50.
In other events, Ahiati Zachariah scored in the first and 78th minutes as Volta zone defeated the Northern zone in the men’s football championship.
Love Asamoah scored a brace in the ASHBA win over Northern zone in the women’s football action.
Elsewhere, EGA and Volta played a pulsating 1-1 drawn game in another women’s football game.
Erica Agbo-Asafo opened the scores for Volta before Princesses scored the equalising goal. Volta eventually won the penalty kicks after converting four while EGA scored three.
Host Ashanti- Bono Ahafo (ASHBA) zone clinched their second victory in the men’s football tournament after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Northern zone at the ongoing Colleges of Education Sports Association (COESA) Games at the Paa Joe Stadium in Kumasi.
Clement Oyame’s header from a corner kick sent the Paa Joe stadium into ruptures in the first half but the Northerners came back strongly in the second half to pull parity through Richmond Aniah’s well-timed strike.
The hosts were not to be undone as TheophilusAsumadu restored their lead after tapping in from close range minutes to the end of the topsy-turvy game.
It was ASHBA’s second victory in the competition afterrallying from a goal down to defeat Eastern-Greater Accra (EGA) zone in the opening game on Monday.
Volta recorded a 2-0 success over CENWEST in the other men’s football match played on match day two of the competition.
In women’s volleyball, the Northern beat CENWEST3-0 while ASHBA also beat EGA3-0.
In the men’s division, the Northern zone beat Volta 3-1 while EGA beat CENWESTby the same scoreline.
The competition will end tomorrow.
