‘Centre of the World’ golf launched at Tema

The Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), on Tuesday, launched the second edition of the Centre of the World Invitational golf tournament at the Tema Country Golf Club (TCGC).

Dubbed, ‘The Year of Return Edition’, it is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 13.

The tournament is under the joint auspices of the Ministries of Tourism Arts and Culture and Youth and Sports as well as the GTDC and the TCGC.

This year’s edition is being sponsored by Japan Motors, Accra City hotel, Labadi Beach Hotel, State Insurance Company (SIC) and the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA).

Speaking at the launch, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GTDC, Ms Akofa Dokosi said the event was part of activities to mark the ‘Year of Return.’

She explained that 2019 marks 400 years of the arrival of the first enslaved African in Jamestown.

In line with this, Ms Dokosi said Ghana declared 2019 as the year of return for the global African family to return home to Ghana to mark the historic period.

The Deputy CEO indicated that the initiative would contribute to the development of the tourism sector by strengthening promotion, infrastructure, Information Technology (IT) and efficient service delivery.

She gave the assurance that the Company would transform the Tema Country Golf Club into a world-class leisure resort with the capacity to host approved tournaments, adding that the transformation would be achieved with the help of investors.

On his part, Nana Dr Ani Agyei III, Captain of the TCGC said the park had a unique geographical location to tourism development in the country, adding that, the park is at the centre of the world by virtue of its geographical location.

Nana Dr Agyei III said the tournament was a major event for the club as it would bring together 150 golfers across Ghana and the West Coast of Africa.
