Cattle posing danger to road users in Tema

Indiscriminate crossing of roads by cattle is posing danger to drivers and other road users in the Tema metropolis.

The cattle constantly cross the road at any time of day including rush hours, hence endangering the lives of drivers and pedestrians.

While some of the herdsmen try to control the flock, others look on unconcerned and allow the cattle to stray onto roads or graze on its shoulders, this paper has observed.

Some drivers who spoke to the Ghanaian Times alleged that sometimes the unpredictable cattle break windscreens of vehicles and no one takes responsibility for the damage.

A mechanic, Morison Akuamoah, claimed he had been injured once by a bull that suddenly became erratic and he had to foot his own medical bills.

According to him, what is more disturbing is the fact that they even use any road including highways and there are no cattle crossing signs to warn others.

“I feel our safety is being compromised as road users because the owners of the herd do not take steps to identify or minimise the risk,” he lamented.

He also expressed displeasure about littering of the roads with the dung of the cattle and also the fact that the animals cause terrible traffic.

A situation he said was becoming unbearable and appears helpless.
