Caprice robbery case: 4 accused plead not guilty

Four out of five persons arrested in connection with robbery that occurred at Caprice, in Accra, have pleaded not guilty to charges preferred against them, when they appeared before the Circuit Court.

The four suspects are: Prince Anthony Chiobi, Izichuku Igwenagu, Martin Ahamafula and Emmanuella Chinwetalu.

All five have been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

Godfred Chukubuka, also known as Caleb, now a convict, was not brought to court and his plea was not taken.

Apart from Emmanuella, who has been granted GH¢100,000 bail by the circuit court, the rest have been remanded till the final determination of the case.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Haligah, said the police were still on the heels of the sixth suspect, Yaw John Darko Ikenna, who is at large.

He said “we need more time to arrest the sixth accused and others believed to be part of the robbery. The prosecution is liaising with International Police (INTERPOL), Nigeria, arrest the sixth accused and brought to Ghana to face justice.”

ASP Haligah prayed the court to take the pleas of the accused and the case has been adjourned to January 24, 2023.

He said on December 9, 2022, the Accra Regional Police Command received information that some armed men on motorcycles had attacked, shot and robbed a Chinese woman at Caprice, a suburb of Accra.

ASP Haligah said when police personnel went to the scene, the victim informed them that the robbers took GH¢370,000, which she had cashed from the Standard Chartered Bank West Hills Mall branch.

The court heard that the robbers also made away GH¢40,000 and $8,000 as well as two iPhones (iPhone 11 and 8+).

The prosecution said investigation, revealed that the suspects and others, were at a hideout at Buduburam.

ASP Haligah said when the police got to the hideout, the robbers engaged them in a shootout resulting in the death of Nneji Harrison Ogbonna and another suspect.

The prosecution said that the police arrested accused, while others escaped.

According to the prosecution, investigations revealed that Ikenna, now at large, had planned with Godfred Chukubuka, who had been convicted for 10 years by the Circuit Court, for robbery, to commit similar offence.

The court heard that accused entered Ghana through unapproved routes to commit crime and go back.

ASP Haligah said the police had received information that Ikenna was hiding in Nigeria and he had sent money (GH¢1,300) as transportation for his wife Emmanuella, the third accused to join him in Nigeria
