The Central Regional Coordinating Council in collaboration with all the 22 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region, will on Friday, embark on a clean-up exercise along the various highways.
The second edition of the exercise, dubbed “Operation Keep the Highways Clean” also coincides with preparations geared toward activities marking the ‘Year of Return’ declared by the government as well as Panafest and Emancipation Day.
An initiative of the Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan, has pioneered the endorsement of the exercise by the various paramouncies and the Regional House of Chiefs, Regional Security Council, Zoomlion, and the Ghana Education Service.
All the institutions have, therefore, declared their resolve to participate in the programme, aimed at ridding the highways of filth.
The Regional Minister, who announced the programme at a stakeholders meeting on PANAFEST/Emancipation Day and the Year of Return in Cape Coast on Friday, said that the clean-up campaign forms part of efforts by the RCC to promote good sanitation practices among residents in the region.
The meeting was attended by members from the Central Regional House of Chiefs, MMDCEs from the area, members of the PANAFEST Foundation, Ghana Tourist Authority and other stakeholders who deliberated on how to ensure the success of the celebrations.
He urged the various MMDCEs to liaise with the various stakeholders in their areas to undertake the exercise and to support activities marking this year’s PANAFEST/ Emancipation and the Year of Return project.
The Regional Minister indicated that the celebration was meant to remind the world of the atrocities of slavery and the need for people to work hard to prevent it from recurring.
Other speakers at the programme pledged their commitment to ensuring the success of the celebrations.
