Bluecrest University College (BUC) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rotary Club of Accra-Industrial.
The MoU is aimed at setting up Rotract Club on BUC campus and promote women in Information Communication Technology (ICT).
The four year collaboration will also have a sponsorship package for a student to be selected by Rotary Club and also offer trainings and workshops for members of club.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Rector of BUC, Dr Sujith Jayaprakash, said the MoU was a big push for the institution.
He said the focus of the institution was to provide skills-based education with the vision of providing professionals with the required techniques on the job market.
Dr Jayaprakash said the institution was preparing towards its charter and would focus on diversifying sectors, apart from fashion and design.
He said the MoU seeks to bridge the gap between academia and industry as well as women and ICT.
“The reason we want to give scholarship to women in ICT is because we found out that a lot of women are not patronising IT so we want to bring in more women into the sector,” he said.
He also mentioned that the scholarship was to also to make education affordable to all, adding that tertiary education space had become volatile with a lot of players in the market, thereby making education expensive.
The Rector of BUC said with coming on board of Rotract club, BUC students would have the opportunity to engage in community service and also interact with professionals
“It will help our students to understand the need to empathise with the people living in their communities and also understand the value of education they are receiving at Bluecrest.”
“This partnership will help our students to meet a lot of industry professionals which will help them grow in their chosen careers as well as have internship placements for them,” Mr Jayaprakash said.
The president for Rotary Club Accra-Industrial, Mr Dean S. Senchim, said the national president of the club, Victoria Osei Prempeh was looking forward to empowering women during her tenure, adding that the MoU was timely.
He said one of the seven focus of Rotary International was basic education and literacy, stating that Bluecrest was well branded in the area of academics, hence the partnership
He said in the short to medium term the club was looking at making the Bluecrest Rotaract a reality to ensure Rotarians who were interested in some of the courses ran by the institutions to come on board to study.
Mr Senchim said the club would ensure that beneficiaries of the scholarship were serious and industrious adding that the club would provide all educational materials needed to enhance their studies.
