The Bulk Oil Distribution Company (BOST) on Friday donated assorted relief items worth GH¢100, 000 to the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage to alleviate their plight.
The items included 170 bags of rice, 70 boxes of cooking oil and 2,000 bags of sachet water and were handed over to the District Chief Executive (DCE) of North Tongu, Mr Divine Osborne K. Fenu, at Battor for onward distribution to the affected communities.
The Head of External Relations of BOST, Mr Malik Adjei, making the presentation said BOST was committed to touching the lives of the victims adding that provision of relief items to the victims was the best form of motivation for people in need.
Stressing that the dam spillage called for urgent measures to ensure the safety and regulation of housing in Ghana.
For his part, Mr Fenu expressed gratitude to BOST and called on Ghanaians to go to the aid of the victims.
The North Tongu DCE said most of the victims who were living in schools and makeshift structures had joined their families.
He said the Assembly needs more resources as efforts were being made to resettle the victims.
The Akosombo Dam spillage had affected more than 12,000 residents and farm lands, along the Volta Lake, Mepe and other communities in the North and South Tongu constituencies in the Volta Region.
The Ministry of Finance made allocation for the victims in the 2024 Budget.
Already, the government had set up an inter-ministerial committee, made up of the ministries of the Interior, Health and Local Government and Rural Development to collect data and take stock of the destruction caused to livelihoods, farm lands and businesses.
