Bono Regional Labour Office worried about low patronage of services

The Bono Regional Labour Office is raising concern about the low patronage of their services by the public despite their existence in the region.

The Bono Region formerly (Brong-Ahafo) is noted for recording high cases of irregular migration and other labour related issues but it appears many in the region are unaware of the department.

As part of moves to change the situation, the Bono Labour Department in partnership with GIZ yesterday embarked on a float in the Sunyani Municipality to create awareness on the services and mandates of the labour department and the risks of irregular migration, particularly in the three regions (Bono, Bono East and Ahafo).

The campaign forms part of the capacity building project on migration and employment commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development being implemented by GIZ

Speaking to the Ghanaian Times during the float, Mr Isaac MaalmaKaminta, Regional Labour Officer disclosed that 1,707 job seekers made up of 1,057 males and 650 females with 623 registered with the department in 2021.

He said 386 males and 237 females were successfully placed in the year under review.

The Regional Labour Officer also indicated that for the 3rd quarter of this year 1,128 job seekers made up of 741 males and 387 females with 390 vacancies adding that 265 males and 125 females have so far been placed.

Mr Kaminta said the Labour Office was not only there for job seekers but offered vital information such as compensation payment and training of job seekers among others he commended GIZ for their support to the Labour Department under the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations in carrying out their mandate.

The Regional Advisor for Migration and Employment Promotion Project of GIZ, Mr Joshua Ahiaba, said the two-year programme was  aimed at mitigating irregular migration on the Ghanaian economy.

He said the three regions Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions had been identified as the hotspot of irregular migration hence the awareness creation to sensitize the people on the need to seek for right source to guide them in order not to fall victim to exploiters.

As part of the project his outfit is building the capacity of the labour department to function well in order to address some of the challenges identified.
