A total of 72 accident cases were recorded in the Bono Region between January and June this year resulting in 44 deaths.
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Regional Commander, Superintendent Stephen Tenkorang revealed this during a radio talkshow on Nimdee FM in Sunyani and monitored by the Ghanaian Times.
According to Supt. Tenkorang, 51 cases were recorded in the first quarter of the year claiming 21 lives, with serious and minor injuries.
The MTTD Commander said, a total of 85 vehicles were involved in accidents, made up of 35 commercial and 14 private vehicles which resulted in 23 deaths and 51 injuries.
He added that “we recorded 21 cases in the second quarter, out of this 16 were fatal, involving 68 vehicles.
The cases he noted witnessed a sharp rise as compared to the same period in 2020.
He attributed the causes of these accidents to abuse of road traffic regulations, wrongful overtaking, and poor vehicle maintenance culture among others.
He appealed to drivers to be careful while driving and ensure maintenance of their vehicles in order to reduce the spate of accidents being recorded on the road.
