Bluecrest school of fashion, design holds entrepreneurship event

The School of Fashion and Design at Bluecrest University College has held a three-day fashion entrepreneurship master class in Accra.

Held in collaboration with Odina Couture, the class which began on Thursday and ended on Saturday was on the theme “Scale up your fashion business to the next level.”

It had 28 participants including 14 alumnus of the school who were trained on various topics in the fashion industry.

Dr Sujith Jayaprakash, Rector, Bluecrest School of Fashion and Design said the school saw the need to bring on board some fashion entrepreneurs in the country to interact and impact knowledge into participants.

“So we reached out to our collaborators who are already established fashion houses in Ghana to educate our students. But then we did not want to limit it to our students but budding fashion entrepreneurs,” he stated.

Revealing that the class was a strategy taken by the school this year, Dr Jayaprakash said it was an insightful one, a first of its kind, adding that “very soon we will come out with a six months fashion entrepreneurship programme.”

Mr Kwame Amoabeng, Chief Executive Officer, Odina Couture underscored that the class was to provide support to participants.

“It can be a lonely journey so as you are starting, you need people who have experience so you can tap from it,” he added.

Similarly, Mr Amoabeng stated that the class was educative as he shared his experiences and suggested solutions to the challenges of participants.

He emphasised that the class should be encouraged and held annually to afford others the opportunity to enrich themselves.

“And if possible get to know what people are doing yearly. Other people can also join the next cohorts so people share their experiences then it can be like a dialogue where we can start collaborations among ourselves,” he added.

Alma Tawia, Founder, Prestige Kente said it was crucial for fashion entrepreneurs to be able to sustain their businesses.

“I took them through sustainable fashion because it is the only thing now especially as they are budding entrepreneurs it is good for them to have knowledge about the trends in the fashion industry and how they can prepare their businesses,” she said.

“Not just wait till you start operation but in whatever you are doing now I provoked their minds to think how they are doing what they are doing. That now we don’t just think in the short term but the long term,” she added.

The Chief Executive Officer, Gamel Clodin, Gamel Adam Tabi stressed the need for entrepreneurs to take their businesses’ financing very importantly.

“Having an idea or knowing the strengths of your business in terms of the finances is one of the prerequisite of running a very successful company because at any point in time you will know whether your business is growing or failing,” he stated.

“But if you don’t understand your finances, you won’t know when to spend or not, how to project and there is a lot of decisions you can’t take,” he added.
