Blessing Basket Project supports Nyariga community to fight COVID-19

The Blessing Basket Project Ghana, a non-governmental organisation which supports basket weavers at the Nyariga community in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region, on Friday donated COVID-19 logistics worth GH¢38,780 to 32 basket weaving groups in the area.

The items funded by  two organisations based in United States of America (USA) known as “Ten By  Three and Trans Chemicals” included 1,000 nose masks 40, gallons of liquid soap, 1, 550 pieces of carbonic soap, 40 veronica buckets,  hand sanitisers and tissues

Speaking at the donation on Saturday, the Country Director of the Blessing Basket Project Ghana, Mr Abdulai Asuah, said that his outfit, with the support from Ten By Three under the auspices Chief Executive Officer, Ms Theresa Carrington, decided to support the groups with the COVID-19 logistics because they were their major partners.

He said over the years the Blessing Basket Project Ghana and“Ten By Three” organisation had empowered the basket weavers who were predominantly women to go into mass production of basket weaving for export.

He added that as part of their corporate social responsibility the Blessing Basket Project Ghana and the“Ten By Three” had also built a Junior High School for girls and also constructed computer laboratory and stuffed it with computers as well as built craft centre for their activities.

The Country Director who disclosed that before the COVID-19 his outfit used to ship 10-15, 000 baskets worth GH¢250,000 in a week to Europe, stated the COVID -19 had affected the business.

Sharing her testimony about the benefit of the support, Mrs Afamah Asarige said the basket weaving project initiated by the two organisations had contributed to the reduction of poverty in the area and thanked the organisation for the support.

She, however, indicated that with the upsurge of the COVID-19, the basket weaving business had dropped, making life unbearable.

The Acting Chief of the Zaare community, Mr Paul Agoo, urged the group to ensure that they used the COVID-19 logistics properly to help fight against the spread of the pandemic.
