Black Galaxies arrive in Constantine …as Morocco withdraw from tournament

The Black Galaxies, Ghana’s locally based national football team, have arrived in the city of Constantine for the Championship of Africa Nations (CHAN) competition.

The city will serve as the base for Team Ghana for the group stage of the 2022 TotalEnergies sponsored Championship in Algiers.

Ghana departed the City of Algiers yesterday and touched down in the capital of the Eastern Province at 7:30 am.

A delegation made up of management members, technical staff and players were met on arrival by the CHAN 2022 Local Organising Committee (LOC).

Ghana is making a return to the CHAN competition after missing out of the competition since 2014.

The Black Galaxies were in the grand final of the competition in 2009 and 2014 but failed to win on both occasions.

Ghana will now face Madagascar and Sudan after Morocco announced her withdrawal from the championship yesterday.

“Moroccans has withdrawn from the tournament after the Algerian government rejected its request for the team to fly there directly on Morocco’s national airline, the Moroccan football federation said yesterday.

Algeria closed its airspace to Moroccan aircraft in 2021 after it unilaterally severed diplomatic ties with its North African neighbour.

Morocco are the title holders of the championship for players under 23 who still play in African

countries. The tournament starts today and ends on February 4.

Soccer authorities in Rabat had written to the Confederation of African Football to say Morocco would only take part if its team could take a direct flight to Algeria with Royal Air Maroc.

Morocco’s senior national team last month became the first from an African country to reach the World Cup semifinals, raising the global profile of Moroccan soccer. –GFA
