Ghana’s Martha Bissah capped her Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) indoor track and field career by earning the Most Outstanding Track Athlete honours for the third time as a Spartan, leading the Norfolk State women to a runner-up team finish on Saturday at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex, USA.
Bissah won conference titles in the 800 metres (2:09.17), mile (4:52.27) and 3,000 metres (10:18.66) at the weekend.
She also ran a leg on the winning distance medley relay on Friday and a leg on the fifth-place 4×400 relay on Saturday, contributing a total of 33.5 points to Norfolk State University’s (NSU) team total of 131 points. North Carolina A&T won the team title with 165.
Bissah has never lost an individual MEAC indoor championship race in her career, winning a total of 11 gold medals. Last year was the only time she did not win indoor Most Outstanding Runner honours – perhaps only due to her not competing in the 3,000m.
Bissah had plenty of company on the medal stand on Saturday. Junior Kiara Grant defended her 2019 60 metres title and matched her meet record of 7.22 seconds. Grant was runner-up in the 200 metres in 23.64 seconds.
Junior Malika Pride placed second in the 400 metres in 54.16 seconds and also finished fifth in the 200 metres in 24.17. Sophomore DaJah Parker-Love also scored in the 60, placing seventh in 7.57 seconds to complete a solid day for NSU in the sprints.
Sophomore Kara Grant also had a busy day, finishing as runner-up in the 800 metres and fifth in both the mile and 3,000 metres. Fellow sophomore Fridah Koech earned the bronze in the 3,000.
Capping the day on the track, NSU finished fifth in the 4×400 relay. The team of Pride, Grant, Grant and Bissah posted a time of 3:53.72. – nsuspartans.com
