Begin processes for creation of Guan constituency-Kofi Adams urges EC

Kofi Adams, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Buem in the Oti Region, has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to begin processes for the creation of Guan Constituency.

He noted that it was imperative that processes begun to get the people in the newly formed Guan District a representative in Parliament.

Mr Adams stated that he has been offering support and assistance to the people in the area but it was time for the EC to kick-start legal processes to create a constituency for them following the inauguration of the Guan District.

“I think the way is clear for the Electoral Commission to immediately bring the Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) to Parliament for the creation of the Guan Constituency, or whatever name they want to give it and I hope well-meaning Ghanaians will support and assist calls for the constituency for the people in the Guan District.

“I want to urge all of you who are interested in governance and who are interested in democracy to join us to put pressure on the Electoral Commission to do what is right, currently there are limits to the support and assistance I can give the people in the Guan District, where am I going to get the MPs share of the common fund because they equally need to have their representative,” Mr Adams intimated.

According to him, the EC did not hold elections for registered voters in the Guan District to elect an MP during the 2020 polls due to the absence of a constituency because the C.I. needed to create the constituency could not mature in the 7th Parliament which consisted of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi traditional areas.

Mr Adams said some residents from those areas sued the EC over their inability to vote and the Guan District in the Oti Region was created following a Legislative Instrument laid in Parliament by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development in 2019 which was previously part of the Hohoe Municipality. –citinewsroom.com
