Baba Yara Stadium closed down

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has temporarily closed down the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi with immediate effect.

A statement signed by Mr. Edmond Appiah – Ag. Regional Director of the NSA said, the stadium is closed to both football and athletics purposes with effect from Monday, February 17, 2020.

The statement said the closure is to enable the NSA and Ministry of Youth and Sports to have ample and uninterrupted time to fix critical places of the stadium before the celebration of Ghana’s 63rd Independence anniversary celebration.

It added that the total renovation would, however, resume immediately after the celebrations.

It said, the public is therefore advised to make alternative arrangements for their programmes, adding that, they would be dully notified when the stadium can host football and athletics again.

Meanwhile Asante Kotoko are considering a switch to the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium, the Nana Gyeabuor Park or the Cape Coast Stadium as their temporal home venue following the closure of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Nana Gyambibi ‘Coker’, who is special aide to Executive chairman Dr. Kwame Kyei says the club was working around the clock to settle on the best option, according to a Ghanasoccernet.com report.

“Following the decision by National Sports Authority, Kotoko are considering Obuasi, Bechem or Cape Coast Sports Stadium to play our home games,” Gyambibi told Light FM.

“However, each comes with its challenges including traveling and economic factors. How influential can these stadiums be for us?

“We have to consider how we can get our supporters behind us and how to convey them to the venue. In all of these, economical factors must be taken into account before we conclude. It is a serious situation for us; I must admit that,” he added. –GNA
