About 90 students of Ayikuma Memorial Municipal Assembly (MA) Basic School in Accra, on Friday undertook an education tour of Achimota School, experiencing for the first time science laboratory experiments and practical lessons in computing.
The Junior High School two and three students visited the Achimota School on the education tour organised by a group of five post-graduate students of Institute of Distance Learning of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) –EduAid.
They visited libraries, science and Information and Communication Technology labs, sporting centres, house of residence, dining halls and place of worship.
The visit to the academic facilities of Achimota, formed part of EduAid’s “The Mind Project,” which is aimed at working on the minds of the deprived students, and motivating them to pursue academic excellence despite the challenges they faced.
The students engaged in a series of scientific experiments on what they have studied in the classroom, and used computers at Achimota basic school for practical lessons, which the students said was their first time to have such an experience.
The students, who could not hide their joy after the tour, also had the opportunity to share some academic experiences with their colleagues at Achimota Basic School.
Gary Joku, who is a final year student and the Head Prefect of Ayikuma Memorial MA basic school, expressed gratitude to the organisers.
He said they had been encouraged to follow their passion to further their academic pursuit at the senior high level and beyond.
“We do science and ICT, but we’ve not seen nor had physical experience with the things we’ve seen here before. This is my first time. It is encouraging, and I’ve learnt a lot,” Joku said.
