The Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly Monday presented 44 dustbins to some basic schools in the municipality.
The bins which formed part of the government’s national waste bins distribution programme is to support the President’s vision of making Accra the cleanest capital city in West Africa.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Mohammed Quaye said the sanitation policy of the government behoves all, metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to ensure that waste management becomes one of the core mandates at the local level, especially in school.
He said the presentation of the dustbins to schools and trotro stations within the municipality would boost efforts at instilling discipline among pupils in the municipality.
“This presentation within the municipality is a major boost to government’s agenda to make Accra a place of priority in tackling sanitation challenge head-on in a sustainable environment,” he added.
Alhaji Quaye stated that the absence of waste bins in households, schools and workplaces was creating serious environmental challenges for the assembly and expressed optimism that the recipients would help change the situation.
“We are making passionate appeal to residents around schools in the municipality to desist from dropping their refuse in school compounds warning that anyone caught would not be spared.”
The MCE appealed to private waste collectors, including Zoomlion to ensure regular collection especially in the schools and urged the assembly members to effectively use the tricycles distributed in the various electoral areas to collect the refuse from the communities.
The Municipal Director of Education, Augustus Owusu–Agyemfra, commended the assembly for the gesture, saying that more of the bins were needed to ensure the schools achieve 100 per cent collection to avert the spread of diseases, especially during the rainy season.
The Presiding Member of the assembly Hudu Ismael, urged the assembly to assist the supervisors of the tricycles with fuel for effective collection of the refuse in the schools.
He explained that the handing-over of the dustbins to the schools would help support the assembly address its sanitation challenges.
