Australia Open: Federer reach quarters

Roger Federer was in a jovial mood after beating Marton Fucsovics at the Australian Open and even mocked his next opponent.

The Swiss star will face aptly named Tennys Sandgren in the quarter-finals on Tuesday after he knocked out No. 12 seed Fabio Fognini earlier in the day.

Federer has never before met the world No. 100 and will be the clear favourite to set up a semi-final showdown with Novak Djokovic.

And the 38-year-old was so relaxed in Melbourne he laughed at the American’s name.

“He was not going to be a baseball player that’s for sure with that name,” Federer joked. “It’s unreal.

“I am looking forward to playing against him.I have never played against Tennys, I have played a lot of tennis in my life but never against Tennys.”

Federer got off to a slow start against Fucsovic’s and lost the first set 6-4.

However, he put that down to fatigue from his epic five-set battle with John Millman in the previous round,

“It was a tough start,” he said. “I thought that Marton played clean. I struggled with the rest of the Millman match, that took my confidence away a little bit, he was battering me from the baseline. – Express Sports
