Atsu to miss 1/16th AFCON stage


Black Stars crocked midfielder, Christian Atsu, is set to miss the round of 16 stage of the ongoing AFCON in Egypt following the injury he sustained early on in the Ghana, Cameroon second group game in Ismailia.

The Newcastle midfielder was substituted 15 minutes into the Black Stars drawn game against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, and missed yesterday’s final group game against Guinea Bissau in Suez.

Sources from the team’s camp have indicated that though scan result on the extent of the injury was not ready, it did not look too good for the midfielder to feature in yesterday’s game.

He is also not likely to play in the 1\16th stage of the competition.

Coach Kwesi Appiah told the media that, he was awaiting the outcome of the scan results, but indications were that, he would miss the next game.

Meanwhile, Thomas Agyepong and defender Jonathan Mensah were taken through separate training sessions on Monday, to assess their fitness after suffering knocks.

Agyepong, played in the first game against Benin and got injured in the first half and had to stay off for a week.

Mensah on the other hand, took a knock in the game against Cameroon, but was able to pass the fitness test on Monday.

The separate training was to enable the technical team monitor the players well after their return from injury. –GNA
