The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asutifi North Constituency, Patrick Bannor, has donated 250 set of furniture to the Ghana Education Service (GES) on Friday at Kenyasi in the Ahafo Region.
It included 60 dual desks for the upper primary, 120 for the lower primary, 31 teachers’ table and chairs, 30 library tables and chairs, five book shelves, two visitors’ chairs, a file cabinet and an announcement board.
The MP had earlier, donated 300 desks, 300 students’ mattresses and 40 computers to Our Ladies of Apostles (OLA) Girls Senior High School (SHS) in the area.
Presenting the items, Mr Bannor indicated that the move was geared towards improving teaching and learning in Asutifi North District for human resource development.
The MP noted that he received funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETfund) for the donations, adding that the items would reduce the inadequate furniture situation on the area.
“A lot of basic schools and our two second cycle institutions especially, Gyamfi Kumanin Secondary Technical (GYASTECH), have furniture challenges. The district assembly is working round the clock to remedy the situation,” he stated.
Mr Bannor reiterated the commitment of President Nana Akufo-Addo to prioritise Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) in the country to give employable skills to the citizenry especially the youth.
He implored the District Education Service to sensitise the students on the proper usage of educational facilities in order for them.
He further urged GES to conduct routine maintenance on its infrastructure, saying that “our district has many development challenges couple with scarce revenue.”
Receiving the furniture, the Asutifi North District Director, GES, Mrs Naomi Asantewaa, expressed gratitude to the MP and the district assembly for supporting educational activities in the area.
The Director said the donation had come at the right time to reduce the crisis of more than two students using one dual desk and appealed for more tables and chairs for schools in the area.
Mrs Asantewaa lauded the positive impact the annual District Teachers’ Awards Scheme which was instituted by the MP and the provision of fuel to the Directorate for monitoring.
