Astro turf installed at Abbey’s Park

An ultra-modern synthetic pitch has been installed at Abbey’s Park, a popular recreational ground in Kumasi.

Commissioning the facility, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Manhyia South Constituency and Education Minister, pointed out that many more footballers will come from the region.

“Manhyia has contributed its quota for Ghana football but we are not done yet. With this new playing field, I hope we produce more players to take Ghana football and the world by storm.” The MP said the likes of Samuel Osei Kuffuor of Bayern Munich fame, Michael Osei, popularly called ‘Ember’ are among the lots churned out from the Abbey’s Park.

Dr Prempeh hoped that the pitch would be a hub for sporting activities and promote healthy lifestyles and also encourage cross community relations in the area.

“It is the first time we have allowed the constituents to have a feel of such a park and I think it is encouraging. Certainly Ashtown has seen many stars but our parks are nothing to write home about. We hope after this one, many corporate companies will support us to put up more astro turfs,” he said.

He also announced that plans were afoot to construct similar parks at Potia and Dichemso, both located in the constituency.

Elated residents who spoke with the Times Sports showered praises on the MP for being a development-oriented leader.
