Asante-Akim Assembly pledges to cooperate with appointee

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Assembly Members’ caucus of the Asante-Akim Central have pledged to cooperate with any person appointed by the president as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area.

They indicated that the Assembly were waiting patiently for the nomination of whoever became successful as the next MCE since the power to appoint the chief executive of an assembly was the sole mandate of the president as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

Addressing a press conference at Konongo, Alex Nyarko, Secretary to the Caucus, urged the public to disregard publications, commentaries and quotes seeking to portray the assembly members as having declared support for a particular person for the position of MCE.

He explained that Madam Susan Akomeah had not expressed her interest to the constituency executives nor assembly members to retain the position as MCE because the power to appoint the chief executive of an assembly was the sole mandate of the president as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

Mr Nyarko, who is also the NPP Financial Secretary for the Asante Akim Central Constituency, reiterated that it was also not true the current acting MCE of the area, Madam Akomeah, had been endorsed by assembly members.

He appealed to President Nana Akufo-Addo to engage in broader consultation in the nominations of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to facilitate the growth and development in the various assemblies.

“The just ended general election has had serious effects on the New Patriotic Party, revealing the displeasure some citizens had for leaders in the assemblies and constituencies. There is the need for varied opinions to play a critical role in the next selection, nomination and appointment of people to lead certain positions at all levels.

“The party has issued directives for persons who have interest to occupy the chief executive positions in the various assemblies to submit their details to the NPP Constituency Executive Committee for further actions and I advise interested persons in the municipality to follow the directives as communicated by the party,” Mr Nyarko stated. -GNA
