Anti-corruption crusader skeptical about OSP’s reporting corruption mode

Vitus Azeem, anti-corruption crusader and former Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative, is skeptical about the practicality of the toll-free number for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for reporting corruption cases for investigation.

He described the move by the OSP, having announced a toll-free number for the public to call and report corruption cases for investigation, as a good one however, skeptical about the practicality of the number for the office.

According to Mr Azeem, people were afraid to speak up publicly against corruption and setting up a mode that could make them report corruption and protect them from any intimidation, was a good idea but added that it depended on actions to be taken.

“People are always afraid to speak up publicly against corruption so if you set up a system that can make people report corruption and protect them from any intimidation, it is a good idea but, then it depends on what actions you will take on those reports,” he stressed.

Commenting on the confirmation of the Acting Auditor-General as the substantive, Mr Azeem noted that he was expecting his confirmation after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had lauded him to avoid questions from the citizenry due to the way his predecessor Daniel Domelevo was pushed out of office.

“I already expected him to be confirmed, just thought that they were going through the processes, and especially when the president came out to praise him, that is his style so that when he is confirmed, nobody will ask questions and I am not surprised that the Acting Auditor-General has been confirmed especially the way his predecessor was pushed out of the scene,” he said.

The OSP on September 12, 2021, announced a toll-free number for the public to call and report corruption cases for investigation which is one of the many initiatives being implemented by the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng following his confirmation and the toll-free number 0800-000-700 was announced on the Twitter handle of the office. –ghanaweb.com
