AMO of NCCE embarks on clean-up exercise, others in Okai Koi sub-metro

As part of the efforts to keep the environment clean, the Accra Metropolitan Office (AMO) of National Commission for Civil Education (NCCE) yesterday organised a clean-up exercise, public education and engagements against filth.

The exercise which was in line with the Operation Clean Your Frontage (OCYF)initiative was to commence at 6:00am but due to the unfavourable weather condition it began at 10:00am and lasted for four hours.

This took place within the Okaikoi South sub-metro, from Circle VIP-Neoplan Station, some parts of Avenor and industrial area and was supported by the other two sub-metros in AMO, Ablekuma South and Ashiedu Keteke.

The exercise was supported by the assembly with brooms, rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, Zoomlion vehicle and the AMA frontage van to aid in sending educative messages to the general public.

Heaps of rubbish were collected at some vantage points, gutters were desilted, part of the team held high placards with educative messages inscribed on them as sand along the roads were swept away.

Speaking after the exercise, the Director of AMOof NCCE, Mr Stanley Addo Quaynor, said as part of their mandate to educate the public there was the need to also ensure efforts to make Accra the cleanest city as President Akufo-Addo had earlier mentioned.

“We are going to reeducate this activity within the other sub-metros in order to accomplish the goal hence the programmeis our contribution towards the OCYF initiative,” he said.

Mr Quaynor said he was hopeful the sensitisation would be taken in good faith by the public and would go by what the programme intended to achieve, since we all want to have a clean environment to reduce our health risks.

“We believe in addressing our environmental issue and the little we have done today, if continued would help reduce sickness, floods and diseases in the country to make the OCYF initiative a success,” he said.

The “Operation Clean Your Frontage” initiative, commenced February 1, 2022 in Accra and championed by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council led by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey.

It sought to make it obligatory for all individuals and corporate entities to be responsible for the cleaning and greening of their immediate surroundings as well as educating people to promote hygiene.

The initiative also forms part of the ‘Let’s Make Accra Work’ agenda and in order to enable its enforcement, all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) passed a by-law late last year.
